(In order to accept Jesus, we must take a step of faith and say we believe in Him. Use this demonstration to show how you can’t receive salvation until you take a step of faith.)

Select a child to be the first “gift taker.” Have the child stand with his or her back and heels pressed flat against the wall. Place the small gift on the floor about 12 inches in front of the child. Allow the child to bend down and pick it up—without moving his or her feet at all! (It’s impossible.)

Next, give everyone an opportunity to pick up the gift. Continue the conversation to explain that God’s gift of salvation through Jesus is right there for us. We just need to take a step of faith to receive it. Now, select a child to move their feet and pick up the gift successfully this time.

Say: Stand with your back and heels pressed flat against the wall. Try to bend down and pick up this gift without moving your feet at all!

It’s impossible, isn’t it? Remember that God’s gift of salvation through Jesus is right there for us. In order to accept Jesus, we just need to take a step of faith and say we believe in Him.

Now, you are allowed to move your feet. Pick up the gift!

Discussion:

  1. Can you think of some of the things God set in motion to prepare for Jesus to be born? (Luke 2:1, Luke 1:35, Matthew 1:19–20, Luke 2:8–14 )
  2. When the angel told Mary that she was going to have a baby who would be called the Son of the Most High, what was her response?
  3. How does your family prepare to celebrate Christmas each year? What can you do to get ready on the inside to celebrate that Jesus came to earth

PRAY: Dear God, thank you for loving me so much that You made a way for me to become Your child through Your gift of Jesus Christ. Amen.
